The input shaft mounted in a bearing assembly in the gearbox housing together with a cylindrical roller bearingin the clutch housing (loose bearing) and with agrooved ball bearing (fixed bearing). For mass reduction, the input shaft has a deepbore. The 1st, 2nd and reverse gear wheels areconnected positively to the input shaft. The 3rd, 4th and 5th gear wheels are loose andrun in needle bearings. The synchromesh body of 3rd/4th gear and 5thgear are connected positively to the input shaftvia a longitudinal grooved spline. The ratio of the output speed to the input speed may be either constant (as in gearboxes) or variable. The engine and motor are coupled to the wheels through clutches, and automatic gearbox, and Hy-Vo Chains. "Seals are necessary when a shaft extends from a housing (enclosure) containing oil, such as a pump or a gearbox."After one of the gears is engaged, the corresponding "idler gear" is also connected tothe input shaft. Locking rings hold the gears in position.
